The Council of Nicea: “We believe…”
This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea. That was when approximately 318 Christian Bishops gathered to formulate what we know as the Nicene Creed, which is still nearly universally used today. This first-ever ecumenical council met in the summer of A.D. 325 for two months at Nicea (modern Iznik) in Bithynia…

ALIVE! Evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus
Imagine, for a moment, that the Resurrection of Jesus is not just a beautiful story commemorated each Easter, but the supreme fact of history—one with the power to transform lives and destinies. As a former skeptic and lifelong researcher, I have devoted my career to examining evidence not only for the mind, but for the…
Ancient Ephesus and the Gospel
The apostle Paul desired to take the Gospel to ancient Ephesus early in his missionary tours, but was forbidden by the Holy Spirit (Acts 16:6). At the end of the second tour, He still wanted to do so and expressed, “I will return to you again if God wills” (Acts 18:21). The location of Ephesus…
Ancient Israel: Faith or Fact?
A common accusation by some of Israel’s neighbors and protesters in the U.S. is that Israel today is guilty of occupying the Palestinians’ homeland. As recently as 2016, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) approved a resolution that Jerusalem is indeed significant – but only to Islam, not to Israel. According to…
Caesarea National Park: a 1st Century Marvel
If you ask most Christians about Caesarea National Park in Judea, you are likely to get a shrug of the shoulders or a puzzled facial expression. If they know about it at all, compared to Nazareth, Bethlehem, or Jerusalem, it doesn’t really count. (more…)
Devolution of Darwinism
Affirming Evidence from Science Darwinism is in decline. Oh yes, most in the professional sciences and even many lay people would not yet admit it. Belief in evolution has become a passport to admit people into the “camp” of respectability. To suggest that Darwin’s mechanism of natural selection may be flawed can cost you your…
Emmanuel: God with Us
Is God knowable? All the religions of the world would answer “No” – except one. Christianity alone claims that God has made Himself known in history in the person of Jesus Christ. Emmanuel or God with us is a central tenet of the Christian faith. The apostle John shows his excitement as he begins his…
Giants in the Bible!?
Wouldn’t a football coach love to have Goliath as his fullback? Any coach could easily put together a championship basketball team made up of Amorites. The Nephilim would make great security guards. Why? There are giants in the Bible! Is there any truth to these passages? This photo from 1902 shows the fossilized skeleton of…
If Mount Moriah could Speak
Author’s Note: The following article is written in first person as if Mount Moriah itself were capable of a personal response. Then Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah. 2 Chronicles 3:1 Jerusalem, atop Mount Moriah, as seen from the Mount of Olives, in a painting by David…
In the Footsteps of JOHN the BAPTIST
Affirming Evidence from Archaeology John’s Life and Ministry John the Baptist, God’s first prophet to Israel after the close of the Old Testament by some 400 years, had a unique ministry. As the Scripture says, “And it is he who will go out a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah…so as…
Jesus, our Mercy Seat
The Jewish Tabernacle, established by God nearly 1,500 years before Christ, included the mercy seat atop the Ark of the Covenant, symbolizing God’s meeting with humanity. The writings of apostles like John and Paul emphasize Christ’s sacrificial role as the mercy seat, reconciling humanity with God through atonement and justification.

The Apostolic Fathers
Anyone who is acquainted with the Bible should be familiar with the apostles of Jesus. References to Peter, Paul, James, John, and others occur throughout the New Testament. Many people have also heard the names of some of the great apostolic fathers of the Christian faith such as Augustine, Irenaeus, Origin, and others. (more…)
The Best Evidence of a Global Flood
The Old Testament and the teaching of Jesus leave no question of Divine judgment of humanity by a past global flood upon the earth. But few topics ignite as much debate – or fascination – as the search for its historical evidence. From marine fossils embedded high in mountain ranges to vast, flat plateaus and…

The Jewish Synagogue and the Gospel
Beginning with Abraham, God chose the Jewish people to be a separated and divinely prepared people – His witnesses and blessing to the nations (see Genesis 12ff.). Furthermore, God gave Old Testament Scripture which prophesied the coming of a Messiah who would atone for the sins of all people. Rather than extend the hope they…
The Ophel: Facilitating Jerusalem Pilgrimage
In the previous issue of this Happ-O-getics newsletter (July 2025) I presented evidence from the current excavation of the City of David which demonstrates proof of Israel’s ancient occupation of Jerusalem and Palestine. I want to follow up with news of the discoveries from current archaeology in the area between the foot of the Temple…
The Shroud: Gaining Authenticity
I did a brief article on the Shroud of Turin about a year ago (Happ-O-getics, May 2022, Vol. 2, Issue 5). The Shroud is thought by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus (Matthew 27:59). What was already known at that time about the Shroud’s authenticity? The shroud of Turin. (Public domain.) (more…)
Was Jesus Literate?
In the last issue of Happ-O-getics, I challenged the view held by some scholars that the illiteracy rate among people at the time of Jesus was at least 98% (they could neither read nor write). Based on the many libraries and volumes of written documents that existed even then, the statistic is quite unlikely. This…

In John 14:16-17 Jesus told the apostles He would ask the Father to “give you another Helper” who will “be in you.” This “Paraclete” (παρα´κλητον in Greek) is identified as the “Spirit of truth,” that is, the Holy Spirit. Jesus was the first “Paraclete” (1 John 2:1) and the Holy Spirit is another of the same kind.
At the time of Jesus, a “paraclete” was used in a court of justice to denote a counsel for the defense—an advocate or intercessor by your side. That’s how we are using it. This publication is dedicated to “Advocating for the Truth of the Christian Faith.” Our prayer is that the “Spirit of truth” will be our indwelling counsel and also the One who advocates for biblical truth within the readers of these pages.
